Deadheads and nurses at the Amen Clinic are rejoicing at the news that the Grateful Dead will be releasing an 80 CD box set featuring 30 never before released shows. The massive collection will be available to fans on September 18, and will commemorate the Dead’s 50th anniversary. It consists of over 73 hours of music, and will cover the years 1965 to 1995.
This difinitive collection is the biggest box set from the band ever, and will be called Thirty Trips Around The Sun. There will be a limited number available, only 6,500 numbered copies. Inside, fans will also find a bonus vinyl 45 record, the B-side of which is the last song the band played together in 1995, “Box of Rain”. A 288 page collectors book is also part of the package. You can pre-order the set on the band’s website. 1,000 lightning bolt USB drives will also be released.
If the $699.95 price tag is a bit much for you, there will be a 4 disc companion set available called Thirty Trips Around the Sun: The Definitive Live Story 1965-1995 and will feature some of the best cuts from the larger collection. Dead archivist David Lemieux stated, “This is, without a doubt, the biggest thing we will ever do.”
